The course is unaccredited; you do not need any qualifications to join but just a willingness to learn. You are welcome if you have little experience of drawing or have done some drawing before but want to continue to develop your skills and continue to improve. The course is flexible and can take into account individual, as well as group needs and is also a good option for those who want to use drawing as a tool to underpin and help develop your ideas and work on other course you may be studying.

If you want to learn to draw and improve your drawing skills, then this is the course for you. It will give you an opportunity to learn a range of techniques to develop your drawing skills whilst working in a supportive, encouraging learning environment. Sessions will include drawing perspective, observational still life and landscapes using a range of drawing materials and media. There is also an opportunity to draw in a museum setting.


Week 1: Topic: Pattern and shape using different drawing materials
How to use and explore a range of drawing materials in different contexts. Draw on a larger scale, do a quick drawing, spend longer, draw to music, draw patterns, shapes, and objects.

Weeks 2: Topic: Creative still life drawing
Draw still-life objects, using tone, texture and surface. Develop your skills by drawing a range of objects and still life composition.

Week 3: Topic: Drawing from V&A collection Museum visit (in central London)
The visit will include activities that will develop your confidence to draw in a real-life context, enabling you to improve your observation and drawing skills in an inspirational setting.

Week 4: Topic: Drawing landscape -Perspective drawing
This week you will learn about different perspective methods and then use these methods to explore and create your own landscape pictures using various picture sources.

Weeks 5 Topic: Landscape composition
Learn about landscape composition, how to structure and make compositions and use perspective to develop your own work.

The teacher will introduce different techniques and you will learn by applying these drawing techniques in a variety of contexts including looking at how some artists have and use drawing to create different types of work. There will be ample opportunities for you to draw while the tutor works with the group, as well as with you on a one-to-one basis, to help you improve your drawing through practice and discussion. Basic resources are provided within each lesson including handouts to support learning and the course materials are also available online. Each 10-week course usually includes at least one museum visit where you will be taught how to draw from museum objects. No work outside the sessions is required. However, the college has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged. While there is no formal homework, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, or websites and books for you to use to enrich your study. A selection of drawing Resources you swill be able to access is available for students on our online learning platform, Office 365.

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor and in written form at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course, but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.
