DJ Skills for Beginners

Course Description

Have you ever wanted to become a DJ and build your confidence with mixing music in front of an audience? The aim of this course is to take your DJing skills from your home to the venue. You will learn beat matching, how to be adaptable to an audience, how to perform as a DJ and how to use relevant software and hardware. The course is open to individuals at all levels and will teach you to mix a variety of different genres.

Course Requirements

The course has no specific requirements and offers individuals the opportunity to be taught DJ skills by a working professional. It will offer individuals the opportunity to develop a variety of DJ skills that will allow you to feel confident when performing in front of an audience. You will be required to bring USB storage and headphones. However, these items can be provided if necessary. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.

Course Content

The course content includes confidence building, beat matching, software and hardware, developing a musical ear, understanding musical timing and rhythm, building your music collection, performance and crescendo and understanding how to respond to the audience and the energy of the room. Finally, you will learn the relevance of how to plan your material for different venues, genres and support or headline gigs.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Advice and Guidance for all further study is available from the Curriculum Manager by request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
