Creativity for Wellness and Recovery: 5-Week Introduction

Course Description

This course is for anyone who wants to nurture their own creativity and positivity. It will be especially beneficial for people living with chronic pain and illness. You will learn how to use simple creativity to enhance your wellness and speed up your recovery. This gentle, short course will focus on drawing and colouring patterns inspired by mandalas and Zentangles. This is an online Zoom course, and you will need to provide your own drawing materials (see Course Requirements).

Course Requirements

For people with no or little experience who want to bring more positivity to their lives. Returning learners can build on what they have already achieved.



You are going to need few sheets of drawing paper, pencil, compass, ruler, thin black ink pen, gel pens or markers and drawing materials you like to use, such as colouring pens, pencils or paints.


This is an online course and will take place on Zoom, so you will need the Zoom app downloaded on your device to join. A link will be sent to your email address 24 hrs before the start of the first class, please check your junk email for this, too.

Course Content

This is a gentle and supportive, practical class to introduce learners to basic designs and colouring, as well as to encourage creative thinking, relaxation and wellbeing.

You will be introduced to the history and design of mandalas and learn how they are used as an aid for relaxation. We will start by drawing a mandala temple, then you will design your own mandalas and zentangles and apply colour in a variety of creative ways. Each session will involve peer and self-reflection, with time taken to identify improvements for future artworks.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through practical activities, peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, Virtual Learning Platform.

Handouts will be available on Microsoft Teams. This will be used to access resources, and for communication amongst the group using Chat and Posts. Your tutor will show you how to access Teams in the first lesson. Assessment

It is a requirement of the course that you complete a Learning Plan to give you ownership and some control over what you learn.

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout. You can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
