Creative Writing: The Writers Craft - Develop your Skills and Understanding

Course Description

This ten-week course is for those wanting to develop their creative writing skills and deepen their understanding of the writing industry.

Location: Camden

Course Requirements

You will need a good level of written English, at least GCSE level.

Course Content

This course is aimed at honing your writing skills and ability to present your work professionally. You will develop new ways of looking at creative writing and expand your critical awareness of your own and others' writing. Topics covered will include: Finding Inspiration, Writing Landscape, Heightening Tension, Writing Villains, Point of View and Different Perspectives, Flashback, Climax and Resolution, Writing an effective Synopsis. You will receive verbal feedback in a supportive atmosphere, strengthen your understanding of what makes good writing and acquire the necessary techniques to improve your own. By the end of the course you will be able to: -respond critically to different forms of creative writing -recognise the importance of building tension in your work -recognise the importance of plotting -identify ways to write effective flashbacks -create a vivid landscape -recognise and identify what makes a good villain -produce an effective climax and resolution -prepare and write a synopsis -produce and present engaging creative fiction

Practical written work Reading and discussion Groupwork All resources used within each lesson are available online There is no mandatory homework. At the beginning of the course you will be supplied with a reading list to enable you to further explore various topics should you wish to. In addition to the classes you are encouraged to read regularly and extend your writing exercises. The college also has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor, and in written form at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs.
