Creative Production: Documentary and Interviewing Techniques (Mixed level)

Course Description

On this course you will gain knowledge of the exciting world of Documentary Filmmaking. Through a series of illustrated lectures and discussions, as well as hands on video practice, you will be introduced to the style, form and structure of a constantly evolving visual story telling that documents and captures aspects of reality

Course Content

Some of the topics which will be covered on the course:

*What is a story worth telling?
*Finding your own voice - Documentary filmmaking styles and aesthetics.
*Interviewing techniques.
*Copyright issues, release forms and technical challenges.
*Using video editing software to produce a short project.
*Screening & distribution platforms for documentary films.

During the course the learners will be assigned exercises for hands on practice

Teaching and Learning Methods

•Illustrated lectures, delivered orally by the lecturer.
•Viewing clips/short films referencing a variety of filmmaking techniques, styles and aesthetics followed by group discussions.
•Hands on workshops in the studio.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.


There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.
