Creative Digital Photography - Level 1

Course Description

This Level 1 qualification runs over one term and will help you develop an understanding of digital photographic processes and and how to manipulate images using Photoshop. This programme aims to support learners to progress either into employment or onto further qualifications in the subject. The course is also a starting point for developing creative photography skills and can lead to progression to our L2 Creative Digital Photography course in January 2024.

Course Requirements

To get the most out of the course you should be prepared to listen, contribute to discussions and respond to the views of others appropriately. You also need to conduct online research and be able to follow written instructions such as an assignment brief. The potential candidate should also have passion for the visual world, specifically picture taking and image manipulation, be able to work independently and as part of a team and to give and receive criticism from others whilst working to deadlines. Experience in photography or related course work is highly encouraged. You will need to have access to a camera with manual settings to work independently outside of lesson time.

Course Content

Through realistic, industry related briefs you will create a range of photography projects from first idea to finished product with a mixture of practical sessions and vocational projects that will give you the opportunity to develop your creative photography and image manipulation skills. Over the duration of the course you will learn how to use your digital camera, including aperture, shutter speed and ISO as well as importing digital images from your camera to the computer or another storage medium. You will understand how to plan a photo shoot while exploring a wide range of photographic genres: portraiture, fashion, editorial and product photography. You will also learn to work with image manipulation industry software to edit and modify your work to a professional standard. This course will enable you to utilise your photos to their full potential and show you the multitude of possibilities that image editing software has to offer for improving and optimising your shots. You will produce a small portfolio of projects and learn academic and employability skills. By the end of the course you will be equipped with creative and basic technical skills needed to become a photographer and image-maker alongside learning valuable employability skills. If you successfully complete the course you will receive a Level 1 Award from OCN London.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. You will also be expected to complete course work and research in your own time.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways e.g. peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. You will also receive specific feedback relating to formal assignments that are both written and practical.

Next Steps and Progression

Upon successful completion of the course you may be able to progress to accredited courses at Level 2.

Additional Learning Support

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available for this course. ALS is subject to an assessment with a trained member of staff and support may include one or more of the following: support in the classroom, out of class workshops such as English, ICT and maths and specialist support for dyslexia. Provision of assistive equipment is also available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments with our Disability Officer.
