This course/workshop will be an opportunity to consolidate previous knowledge and skills in glaze technology. It builds on our previous course: Ceramics: Introduction to Glaze Technology. The course allows you to experiment with mixing your own glazes- investigate glaze composition, its melting point and finish of your choice (glossy, satin or matt); and develop coloured glaze samples. This course does not include glaze application techniques, i.e. surface decoration and you are not able to mass-produce - it is for producing samples.
Location: Camden
Who is this course for and what will I learn?
This is an Intermediate/advanced course. It requires you to have attended a previous Introduction to Glaze Technology course at WMC or an introductory glaze course at a different college. You will be encouraged to test and make glaze samples and prepare your own test tiles on the first day of the workshop. Materials and colorants and some test tiles in buff clay as samples will be provided. However, we cannot accommodate the mixing of large batches of glaze.
How will I learn?
You can either bring in a glaze recipe to test and alter or make your own base glaze to which you will then add colorants to develop your own palette. The tutor will be available to advise, guide and make suggestions. If you would like to keep your samples, please bring lidded 100/200 ml containers to store your glazes in. We will provide a glaze mask, or you can bring your own.
Assessment and next steps
There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. The tutor will discuss your progression plans with you and make suggestions where appropriate
Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Advice and Guidance for all further study is available from the Curriculum Manager by request.
