Ceramics - Monday Evening (Beginners)

Course Description

This is a structured course to develop basic skills and learn beginners’ techniques and processes. On this course you will be introduced to hand building techniques like pinching, coiling, slab work, use of moulds and some basic throwing on the wheel. You will also learn to apply glazes and slips for decorating. Demonstrations and plenty of expert advice will give you a strong basis for further learning.

Course Content

After completing one whole term you will be able to:
• Make ceramics using simple hand building techniques
• Throw a small bowl
• Understand the different processes that clay goes through during the firings in the kiln.
• Understand the properties of and use glazes, slips and other materials for ceramic colour.
• Apply simple decorations
• Choose and apply glazes
• Follow good studio practice including Health and Safety procedures

Teaching and Learning Methods

Plenty of demonstrations and presentations followed by practical learning, with individual tutor support. Lots of inspiration using books, handouts, the internet
You will also receive technical handouts and worksheets.
You will be working at your own pace and be given verbal and written feedback on your progress. If you have additional learning support needs, you will be signposted to support. At the end of the course, the tutor will assess your progress and advise you on your next step.

All resources used within each lesson are available electronically.

Independent Learning

Your tutor will also discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, literature and websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Additional Costs

An allocation of ?8 of clay is included in the fee. Firing of clay is paid for using a token system available through the library. You will need to buy and build your own tool set. We can sell you a basic set at cost price or your tutor can recommend alternatives.
Your tutor will recommend additional equipment and materials to buy depending on your project work. Please bring your own apron or dress appropriately.
Please note that we are not able to fire work that is not made in college. In this, you are not allowed to bring in work from home or elsewhere.
You are only able to bring in your own glazes if you are on a Studio Practice or Advanced course, and these need to be vetted by your tutor for toxicity and compatibility with our firing temperatures and the correct test pieces done before use.
All glazes are provided for Beginner and Intermediate courses, and all learners may bring in CONTEM underglazes if they want additional colours. Please check with your tutor if you are not sure.
