Ceramic and Porcelain Jewellery (Beginner/Intermediate)

Course Description

Have fun with shapes, textures and glazes to create stunning ceramic and porcelain jewellery. You will learn to manipulate clay by moulding, carving, impressing and making into beads. On the course you will also learn to make your own fixings and jump rings (findings). Structured projects and exercises will guide you through the course and the tutor will support you to develop your own ideas and creativity. Basic materials included.

Course Content

During the session you will learn hand-building techniques and apply them to create your own earrings, beads, necklace, broaches and more! You will be working with terracotta, and porcelain clay to add textures, shape and form by modelling impressing and carving into clay Learn to add colour to your piece with our range of underglaze colours Learn how to make your own findings Learn how to make these into jewellery/home decor/key chains and much more.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Learning will take place on each student's own terms at their his or her own pace. Interest in each other's work will be encouraged by means of a group discussion and critique at the end of each session. You can expect a range of learning methods including: Individual and group tuition Practical demonstrations of methods Practical assistance with methods Advice and possibilities for developing work Group discussion and review of work Handouts Resources used within each lesson are available electronically. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, videos or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course, but a certificate of completion is available on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in ceramics or jewellery or perhaps join an accredited L1 or L2 Ceramics course. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
