Casting and Jewellery Making - Mixed Level

Course Description

This course is an exciting opportunity to learn and experiment with different casting techniques used in jewellery making, which will enable you to create small batches of identical objects, as well as unique, one-off pieces. The course will allow you to design and make finished jewellery pieces incorporating cast elements. All basic materials and equipment provided, including sheet metal.

Course Content

This course explores a variety of approaches to casting as well as jewellery making techniques. You will learn how to design and prepare a piece for moulding, using ready-made objects or a modelled/ carved model. You will learn and experiment with silicon/rubber mould making, cuttlefish casting and delft sand casting. This course will focus on the creative process and encourage the development of your own distinctive style through the exploration of these different techniques and their possibilities. You will learn how to create one-off pieces by casting metal into moulds, but also how to create reusable moulds that allow batch production.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be working at your own pace and be given verbal and written feedback on your progress. At the end of the course, the tutor will assess your progress and advise you on your next step. Practical workshop sessions and demonstrations, backed by talks/lectures. There will also be one-to-one discussions with the tutor. If you have additional learning support needs, you will be signposted to support. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor will discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
