This is a lively introduction to the German language, including a gentle introduction to reading and writing in German at a basic level. You will learn the alphabet, simple grammar and vocabulary so you can introduce and speak about yourself (nationality, profession, where you come from etc.) and use numbers from 1 to 100. This course is suitable for complete beginners with no knowledge of the language. On completion of this course, you can progress onto Beginners German pt2 (A1).

No previous knowledge/qualifications are required, just a passion for the German language and culture.
This course will provide you with an introduction to reading and writing German at a basic level, and some basic grammatical ideas (genders, verb endings, personal pronouns and plural nouns) and vocabulary so that you can introduce and speak about yourself. You will learn how to pronounce German sounds and gain an understanding of how the language works which will give you more confidence to communicate. By the end of the course, you will be able to hold a simple conversation about yourself, giving basic personal information and answering questions about yourself.
Teaching and Learning Methods
In this course you will be actively learning German through a variety of interactive classroom activities, in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. You will work in pairs/small groups to practice speaking and listening, with worksheets and activities to develop your reading and writing. Learning will be enriched through the use of audio-visual aids, realia (authentic material), online interactive resources, and role play. We will be using the Coursebook Willkommen 1 by Paul Coggle and Heiner Schenke, Hodder Education. Additional resources are available for learners on our online learning platform, Microsoft Teams. The skills you are learning should be practiced outside college in order to develop and progress. Homework is set every week and is an essential part of your course.
Assessment is continuous and will take place throughout the course. The tutor will give you feedback on your speaking in class, and mark your written work. During the course, you will set up an individual learning plan, where you will reflect on your progress and set your own targets. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Following successful completion of this course, you can progress onto Beginners German pt2 (A1) in the new term.
