This fun course focuses on developing you own versatile and beautiful sketchbooks, whilst cover a range of skills and techniques. You will explore drawing techniques including line, tone, form, and discover the versatility of a range of materials including charcoal, pencils, watercolours, ink and pastels. This will be taught through learning about artists and their process, still life, portraits, and landscapes. You will also learn about perspective, composition and colour while creating a fabulous sketchbook. With artist and lecturer, Alison Kusner.

Who is this course for and what will I learn?
All levels and abilities are welcome, including beginners, those who may not have done any drawing for a long time, as well as those with more experience. In this course, you will use drawing materials and techniques to further improve your skills. As part of the course programme, you will be shown and taught how to explore using charcoal, wet and dry drawing media including ink and pencil. You will practice and learn a range of traditional and non-traditional techniques which you can use during the sessions and when drawing outside the class. The course enables you to consolidate your drawing skills, develop your own ideas and produce work involving more complex compositions. For more experienced practitioners, there is a project option available from which you can further focus and enhance your drawing practice.
How will I learn?
Teaching is both as a whole class and individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material where appropriate. The tutor will introduce the subject using demonstrations and presentations and then work with you 1-1 to make sure you understand and learn at your own pace. As the course progresses, the tutor will discuss individually how you would like to develop and personalise your work during the course. There is no formal homework; however, your tutor may discuss ideas to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.?
Assessment and next steps
There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor, and in written form at the end of the course. The college has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged. Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work, you could consider applying to the accreditted courses including L3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design as a pathway into higher education.
