Adobe After Effects - Introduction to Visual Effects

Course Description

On our ten-week Introduction to Visual Effects course, you will use Adobe After Effects to learn key skills that will enhance your video production. The course covers a range of professional techniques that include planning your project, preparing your assets, creating comps, and animating a variety of visual effects on still images and text.

Course Requirements

This is a beginner's course. However, you are expected to have a basic understanding of using computers. The course will be taught on Macs, and part of the teaching will be to help you better understand and navigate MACOSX. Some video editing experience or familiarity with other related Adobe Creative Suite software would be an advantage but is not a course requirement. You will also need to complete an Individual Learning Plan.

Course Content

The course will teach you to plan your After Effects project workflow and organise key assets and content. You will be working with projects, composition, animating transformations on image and text layers, applying and animating a range of effects and working with keying and compositing. You will also learn how to use export settings and, back up and archive projects. Students enrolled on Creative Digital Media courses at WM College can benefit from a genrous discount on all Adobe Creative Cloud applications. You tutor will explain more

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.


You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course, but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Upon successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress to accredited courses at Level 2 such as Level 2 Film. Alternatively, you may wish to try our higher level video post-production courses which include After Effects - Visual Effects in Film and Video & Film and Video - Editing and Colour Grading.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet learners’ needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an interview with the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
