Ableton Live: The Basics and Beyond

Course Description

Ableton Live is the choice of many music producers and DJs as it provides a level of interactivity for live performance not available in other packages. You can use it as a traditional sequencer or integrate Ableton into live DJ and music performances. The course will provide a solid foundation in using Ableton and will help you develop an understanding of the basics of music production.

Course Content

The course will focus upon learning Ableton Live through an understanding of the basics of music production. You will be encouraged to develop your keyboard skills and engage with basic music theory.

Please note: although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August / September you will be entitled to the ?early bird? discount.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through:

? Practical music making activities
? Peer assessment
? Listening and analysis
? Demonstration and discussion
? Use of supporting online materials (Google Classroom / ILearn)
? Individual practice
? Use of ILT (computers)
? Continuous assessment

Independent Learning

In addition to the classes you will be expected to work independently to develop your knowledge of Ableton, music production and digital music making skills. The focus should be on practical music making / music production but should also include your own research to help develop this. The College provides access to computers with the relevant software in the Library and the Learning Centre.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways e.g. peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher.

Qualification you will achieve

This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Additional Costs

Although WM College provides all you need in class your development with the software will be stronger if you have access to it outside of class. Ableton is cross-platform (PC and Mac) and the Lite version comes free with a variety of cheap digital keyboards. Ask your tutor for advice.
