Bookkeeping - AAT Award Level 1

Course Description

This course will provide you with the basic skills and essential knowledge to manage financial records and books effectively. You will become confident with accounting terminology, financial documents and processes, up to prime entry books. Whether you are enhancing skills for a career change or use in your current workplace, or want to gain employment as a trainee bookkeeper, assistant cashier, accounts clerk or finance assistant, this is the course for you.

Course Requirements

With this qualification there is no need for any prior accounting knowledge. This qualification will give you a solid background in single entry bookkeeping. However, you should have English, maths and IT skills at level 1. If you do not have the entry requirements, you will need to conduct a maths assessment to ensure your skills are at the necessary level to succeed on the course.

Course Content

On this course you will develop practical accountancy skills in the processing financial transactions and in using associated documents and processes. By the end of the course, you will be able to check transactions for accuracy, make entries in appropriate daybooks & cashbook, and calculate sales invoices and credit notes. You will also be able to deal with more complex bookkeeping procedures, including dealing with analysed daybooks & cash book and bank reconciliation.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles to support you in achieving your goals. The teaching on this course will involve lectures, discussions, course book, individual practice, and lots of worked examples. You will spend the majority of your time practising using a PC. Throughout the course, your tutor will give you verbal and written feedback on your progress towards the requirements of the qualification. The skills you are learning should be practised outside college and all resources will be uploaded to our Teams platform for you to access from home so that you develop and progress. Your practical skills should be supplemented with the study necessary to successfully complete the range of different assessments.

Assessment

Students must successfully complete one end-of-qualification computer-based assessment to achieve the AAT Award in Bookkeeping Level 1 qualification.

Next Steps and Progression

Following successful completion of your course you can progress to Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping / Accounting related courses or employment.

Additional Learning Support

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available for this course. ALS is subject to an assessment with a trained member of staff and support may include one or more of the following: support in the classroom, out of class workshops such as English, ICT and maths and specialist support for dyslexia. Provision of assistive equipment is also available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments with our Disability Officer. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site.
