9 tips to beating the post-holiday blues

Summer holidays are brilliant for relaxation, but as soon as September arrives, many of us feel the post-holiday blues and getting back into the routine of work and day-to-day life can be a bit of a struggle. The sudden return to early mornings, busier schedules, and colder days can feel overwhelming.

The good news? September is also the perfect moment for a fresh start. By creating a routine and focusing on upskilling or learning something new, you can channel that “back to school” energy into positive habits that boost your wellbeing, confidence, and even your career.

Whether it’s through small lifestyle changes or by joining a short course with us, we’ve put together nine practical tips to help you reset this September and get back into the groove of things.

1. Reflect on your summer

Before jumping into something new, reflect on what worked well for you over the summer. What habits do you want to keep, and which ones would you like to change? Setting intentions gives your September routine a stronger foundation.

2. Set realistic learning goals

Big goals often fizzle out. Instead, commit to small wins. For example: “I’ll study 30 minutes after dinner” is far more effective than “I’ll study three hours every night.” If you’re joining one of our adult short courses in Camden and North London, remember that steady progress is the key to long-term success.

3. Reset your sleep routine

Late nights and lie-ins might have been fun in August, but consistent sleep is your secret weapon in September. Gradually adjust your sleep and wake times so you’re energised for work, family, and study.

4. Create a study-friendly space

Whether it’s a quiet corner at home, a tidy desk, or even a bag packed with essentials the night before, organising your space reduces stress and helps you stay focused – especially important if you’re learning a new skill this autumn.

5. Plan your week like a pro

Use a planner, app, or calendar to balance work, study, downtime, and family life. If you’re enrolling in a WM College short course in London, treat those class times as non-negotiable self-care and learning slots.

6. Reconnect with your “why”

Ask yourself why you want a routine. Do you want to progress your career, explore your creativity, or gain confidence in digital or professional skills? Keeping your “why” in mind will help you stay motivated throughout the term.

7. Carve out 30 minutes for yourself

If you have children, carving out learning time can feel impossible. Plan a 30-minute window for yourself by distracting the kids with a puzzle, TV show, or playdate. That half-hour of focus can be transformational.

8. Build a structure with short courses

At WM College, we specialise in short courses for adults in North London – from art and design to professional skills. Enrolling in a course gives you a ready-made routine, dedicated learning time, and the chance to meet like-minded people in your community.

And if you’re a parent, it’s a powerful way for your children to see the value of lifelong learning.
