Ruskin Gallery at WMC Jan 2012

Ruskin Gallery at WMC presents WMC Associate Artists 2012 from 11 to 31 January, 10-5pm Mon-Sat
at Working Men's College 44 Crowndale Road NW1 1TR
Elaine Ginsburg, WMC Associate Artist 2012, investigates the materiality of objects and their interactions using a wide range of materials and techniques from acrylic paint to plaster. Ginsburg's ambitious quest has led her to painting with foam: warm circular shapes are throghtfully placed around the visual plane, with subtle injection of contrasting colours. Ginsburg's process in layering, glazing, and wiping off reflects her interest in what the philosopher Christine Battersby ('Phenomenal Woman' 1998) has called "feminist metaphysics of fluidity", which focuses on "becoming" rather than on "being" where new forms are perceived form "forgotten patterns of difference" (Battersby 1998).
Elaine Ginsburg lives and works in London. Her recent shows include i-sho at The Gallery, Stoke Newington (2011) and Pragmata at Islington Arts Factory (2011).
Tina Rowe, WMC Associate Artist 2012, is also concerned with materiality. By introducing the print to layers upon layers of solvent, Rowe observes the reaction, and manually manipulates the colours and shades of photographic impages. This processing of images on various types of paper allows a greater degree of creative freedom, quite different from that of digital construction. The resulting vibratn cyanotypes act as a reminder fo the physical labour and chemical reactions inherent in the field of photography. Contrary to Ginsburg's abstract pursuit, Rowe's photographic subjects include families and strangers in Krakow or Hamburg that are brused with multiple colours and dipped in sunlight.
Tina Rowe lives and works in London. Her recent shows include the Independent Photographers' Annual (23rd) Exhibition, Strand Gallery, London (2011) as well as the Fitzrovia Photography Prize, Diemar Noble (2011)
