Escape to College
Thirty year old Tara McKeown is a single mum of three, and what with childcare and living in a small flat, she regularly “escapes” to the peace and quiet of Working Men’s College to study. “Studying keeps me going,” she says.
Tara has been coming to the college since 2004 when she first signed up to study literacy and numeracy. “I was good at maths at school; it was my strong subject” , She has only praise for her teacher Patience Itua whom she says is “great!”
Studying numeracy has enabled Tara to help her children with their homework and she says learning has positively changed her relationship with them.
Tara’s next learning pathway took her onto the Introduction to Computing course. “I used email for the first time at college, and this opened up a whole new world for me,” she says. She enjoyed IT so much that she carried on climbing the ladder and is now enrolled to study Word as part of the Advanced ECDL course.
Tara has nothing but praise for her teachers at WMC, “They are really good and supportive. Tighe Twomey is a brilliant teacher, one of the best!”
Listening to Tara, it is easy to spot the enthusiasm and motivation she exudes from her experiences of being a student. “I’m gaining my self-esteem and self-assurance back again!” hopes to use her learning to gain employment in the caring professions working with the elderly.
