Visual and Performing Arts: Access to Art & Design

Camden based Lisa Maguire is a student on the Access to Art and Design course. As she describes her experiences of her learning at Working Men’s College, it is clear that Lisa is thrilled by her choice of college.

“The Access course gives you the confidence to access your own art and to communicate with your audience; it helps you to find your niche. It is a constant feeding process and you are taught to be inspired by your environment.” Lisa is working with a number of media namely sculpture, photography and photographic screen printing. Her big project, a sculpture made from paper shredding, was inspired by a documentary about Yemeni brick makers.

“I was going to make a free-form sculpture,” she says, “but it isn’t really me – I’m into Dadaism so I’m combining a lot of techniques.”

As well as being provided with top rate resources, Lisa praises the teaching and guidance she gets on the Access course. “The teaching here is fabulous,” she enthuses. “Tony Jennings is first class. He is patient, helpful, dedicated and has diverse experience in art. All our tutors are artists and they are down to earth – they all have a wealth of knowledge that they share with the students.

Our technical support is also amazing - they help us with every problem we may have, using their practical knowledge. As they are qualified artists in their own right, you learn loads from them. In fact, I was offered two other university places, and I said no thanks – I’m staying here!”
