What are the specific aims of this project?
The primary aim of the Languages Club is to bring together native speakers of languages, either improving English or learning another language in the college or in the community, and to provide them with an opportunity to raise their awareness of different cultures and improve their language skills.
The main aims of the Languages Club are to:
- Create a social, welcoming and thriving environment where learners can share the experience of language learning and consequently achieve their full potential
- Promote social cohesion by bringing together learners from different cultures
- Promote a proactive attitude towards language learning
- Create opportunities for all those who promote individual and collective diversity
Furthermore, the club aims to provide a better comprehension of the importance of active language learning through communication with native speakers and peers learning the same language.
Who is it for?
It is for all people either already learning a language or interested in learning a language.
What do I get out of being a member of the club?
If you are attending a regular language class, the club can help you to:
- Improve your language through real engagement with other learners from diverse ethnic backgrounds (socio-cultural context)
- Improve confidence in using a new language leading to higher self esteem
- Be able to access services more effectively
- Have increased employment opportunities here and abroad
- Meet people from diverse backgrounds
What are the activities?
Some of the activites are listed below:
Monthly open meetings:
The purpose of these meetings will be to encourage members of the public to explore language learning by sharing language learning experience with students at WMC, to try out any phrases that they know with native speakers of languages, ask questions regarding the language structure in the languages surgery and join a short taster.
Monthly themed or task directed meetings:
The purpose of these meetings will be to improve learners’ confidence to use a language in a supportive environment where they will attend lectures on cultural awareness and participate in themed activities.
Language of the month:
Every fortnight, information and interesting facts about a particular culture will be displayed; events will include things such as a lecture, food and culture evening.
This is your Languages Club, so feel free to make suggestions about the activites you would like the club to include (suggestion box is kept in Student Services).
Do I have to come every week?
No, you don’t. You only need to attend the activites that you are interested in.
What is the membership fee?
The membership is free until end of March. From April a termly membership fee will be introduced under the following categories:
- WMC ESOL Students
- WMC Languages Students
- External Members (learning or interested in improving a language)
(The Membership Fee will vary in accordance with the above categories and will be announced in February 2010)
