Professional Programmes: Teaching Assistants Level 2

Mum of two, Amita Shrestha is a student on the Level 2 Teaching Assistant course. Back home in Nepal, Amita worked with young children and since coming to the UK in the early 1990s, she has wanted to turn her passion for working with children into a profession.

“I always helped out with my three younger siblings when I was a small child myself”, she says. “I love to be with children. I have a lot of knowledge about what engages them and I make activities to educate them.”

Amita became interested in her own learning process some years ago when she did a parenting course at a local parents’ project. This inspired her to study for a professional qualification as a teaching assistant and, she achieved her Level 1 Teaching Assistant certificate at Working Men’s College.

“The course is brilliant,” she says. “The teacher Dilys is so good. She has encouraged me and given me so much support. Level 1 was difficult for me but Dilys helped me to achieve my qualification.”

Amita has a huge bank of her own creative resources she uses in nursery and primary education, ranging from time-telling activities for numeracy, to fishing games to encourage word recognition.

“When I was growing up, I developed an interest in knitting, sewing and cooking. I do all sorts of crafts like making necklaces and paper flowers and I knit and crochet clothing for all the family.

My dream is to be a crèche worker or to work in a primary school – as long as I am working with children.”
